What is a « Grand Cru »?
The best terroirs produce 100% classified grapes. The wines that come from those are entitled to the « Grand cru » label. 320 wine-growing villages take part in the production of champagne. They are classified on a scale called the vintage scale varying from 80 to 100%. There are only17 vintages, i.e. the 17 noblest terroirs, which deserve 100% on that scale.
Those 17 wine-growing villages constitute the elite of the Champagne region. Those ´grand cru´, integrated in a 100% based hierarchical classification, produce the greatest wines in the Champgne region. The quality is explained by several criteria:
- the chalky soils
- a declivity on the slopes
- an optimal exposition to the sun
- the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay stocks
According to a rule from 1911, the wine-controlling authorities establish a classification, granting a ranking to each terroir. Verzy, Verzenay and thus the CHAMPAGNE THILL are included.
